trying new things…tempeh

tempeh has been at the top of my list of foods to try for a while now.

how could it not be? i’ve seen mama pea post several mouth-watering recipes using it and read plenty of other bloggers go on about it, too!

so, last time i was at trader joe’s, i dropped this guy into my cart.

(along with about 10 other impulse buys – that store is dangerous!)

and a couple nights later, i got to work on mama pea’s tempeh tamale pie!

i prepped all of my ingredients and followed her recipe.

i did make a couple changes. i didn’t have pinto beans, so i used black beans instead. i didn’t have tomato sauce, so i used marinara. and i added in some garlic powder, extra chili powder, and some cumin. oh, and of course i decided to include the optional cheese in the recipe! Smile

then i popped it in the oven and pulled it out minutes after brad got home from work. (i’m getting so good at timing dinner to his arrival!)

i served it with light sour cream and chopped black olives.

so, what did i think???

i think i’m a tempeh fan! honestly, there really aren’t many foods i don’t like, so i was expecting to like it. and i was right!

brad liked it too! he guessed that there was some kind of soy product in it right away when he saw it (after guessing quinoa or rice), but he’s not squeamish about trying new things, so he was game.

i’m glad we tried tempeh! brad likes me to cook meat for dinner most nights, so i doubt it’ll be a regular food in our house, but we’ll definitely have it again.

  1. Oh yum. I LOVE tempeh and I have been trying to convince the boy in my life that it’s not a “meat substitute” but a really delicious treat in its own right. This tempeh, sweet potato, kale, and cranberry (!) stew I made last year was sooo good, and I’ve been craving it lately.

I use it in salads sometimes but don’t love it, I am looking for more meatless meals a few nights a week though.

I LOVE Tempeh! I use it a lot on salad, wraps, and in stir-fry. Here’s how I prepare mine: I cut up about half of the package into strips that are maybe a little more than 1/4 inch. In a frying pan heat up maybe 2Tbs olive oil, and 2Tbs either balsamic vinegar (for tempeh in salad or wraps) or soy sauce (for in stir-fry), then lay the tempeh flat in the pan. Pour a little more BS or SS over the tops, cook for may 5 minutes, flip over, cook for another 3-5.

  4. i used it occasionally…not totally crazy about it but don’t hate it.

I’m pretty sure we will not be seeing much tempeh in my house. Not something my boy would want to eat.

  6. I love it!!! def try my tempeh BLT!!!! it was my first experience with tempeh and i must have made it 500x already! i’m trying this next!!!! yum1 =)

I really like tempeh. It’s kind of got a weird, fermented taste to it, but it’s a good, weird fermented taste :).
