change of plans

we had big plans to head to the taste of madison on the square today.

unfortunately, those went quickly down the drain when we realized that our poor puppy needed some emergency veterinary care. 😦

ever since we returned from our honeymoon and picked capone up from the kennel (a new one…), we noticed that he seemed to be scratching his neck a lot. we gave him a bath friday evening, thinking it would help.

yesterday, we noticed a little bloody spot on the side of his neck. we figured that it was just a new cut or scrape from the kennel or playing outside. my mom’s dogs end up with little nicks and scratches from playing all the time, so we didn’t worry about it too much. we babied him a little extra and tried our best to keep him from scratching at it all day yesterday.

then, we woke up today to see blood on our bed and two bloody spots on his neck – one on each side. we tried to clean them up a bit with a warm wet cloth, but he was having none of it. since he recently had some vaccinations and because of his recent kennel stay, we were worried that it might be some kind of infection so we took him into the [emergency] vet.

good thing we took him in!

it turns out that almost his whole neck was a big “hot spot”. that extremely medical term pretty much means that he has an acute itchy area of skin infection that is likely caused by general skin allergies (he has never had any problems like this before), flea allergies (exposed to fleas at the kennel?), or infected ears (he was just at the vet and his ears were fine – we’ve never had problems with his ears). apparently, these symptoms show up very quickly (within hours), so it is definitely possible that he was exposed to something at the kennel and then showed early symptoms (itching) when we got him home.

anyway, our poor baby’s neck was so itchy that he scratched it until it bled! 😦

the vet had to clip the hair from his neck and clean it with antiseptic.

we’ve got antibiotics, steroids, an anti-itch topical spray, and an anti-histimine to give him 2-3 times a day for up to 10 days.

capone's medicine

and we have to do everything we can to prevent him from itching. the vet suggested trying to put socks on him.

capone in booty socks

so we tried my little cotton socks held up with hair ties (hey, the vet suggested it!).

capone walking in socks

but he had those off within a half hour!

(my only moment of relief from worry today was seeing him take a few steps in those socks – he didn’t know what to do! haha – i really wish i had a video.)

we’re going to try some of brad’s longer socks held up with medical tape later. right now, capone is so drugged up and dopey that he’s not even trying to scratch.

capone all dopey

i feel so so awful for him. i can’t imagine how a parent must feel when their child gets sick. i felt sick to my stomach the whole time capone was at the vet and brad has had to tell me to chill out more times today than ever before. i even shed a little tear thinking about how he was so itchy all day yesterday and we didn’t take him in. 😦 i wish he could have told us how he was feeling!

the vet was amazing though! i’m sure it’s a bummer to work on sundays, but dr. sara (great name!) was so friendly and really seemed to care about capone. everyone was so friendly and they took good care of our baby. we went to veterinary emergency service, llc on east broadway in madison.

brad and i are skipping our plans for today and staying home to baby our poor puppy and make him as comfortable as possible.

hopefully, the medicine all works and he is back to his normal, goofy self in no time!

i don’t know how i’m going to leave him to go to work on tuesday! 😦

have you ever had to deal with a sick pet?

it’s awful, so i hope not!

**sorry for all of the random posts lately – i’ll be back tomorrow morning with one of two delicious recipes i made today!

  1. Oh my goodness, I know how you feel! When we came back from vacation Oreo was limping around and it turned out that he had split a nail. If we hadn’t taken him to the vet then it could have gotten infected or hurt worse. It is definitely an awful feeling knowing that they aren’t feeling well and there’s nothing you can do about it. I’m with ya there, girl. So glad that he’s on the road to recovery now!

oh, poor pup! I hope he’s better ASAP! He’s lucky to have such loving parents. 🙂

  3. What a cute pup! Poor little guy! So glad you took him to the vet – that’s always a tough call to make, and you made the right choice!

I’m so happy we did too! we felt so bad though, because we talked about it on Saturday night but decided not to. then it was so bad on Sunday when we took him. 😦 poor baby!

Ohhh poor Capone!! Sick pets are the worst 😦 I’m sure he’ll get plenty of love to help him get well soon. Olive sends puppy kisses 🙂

I have two Golden Retrievers and both have had hot spots. My one Golden has basically had a hot spot this ENTIRE summer and has been on Cephalexin. He even had to get his neck/chest shaved just like your guy! I always had heard they start up when moisture gets trapped under their fur. If you want a good tip, hide the pills in hotdogs. Hopefully his hot spot clears up quickly!

    • sarah says:

thank you for the hot dog tip! we had been using peanut butter, but he would have none of that this morning. we had to wrap them up in deli meat! ugh. getting hot dogs after work today!
