recipe: horseradish hummus

happy wednesday everyone! guess what?! my gardening program is almost over!

[thank goodness…]

i’ll miss being outside every morning and spending so much time in the garden, but i really won’t miss dealing with moody middle schoolers every day. and, since i’m lucky enough to have a majorly flexible schedule, i’ll be volunteering at the garden one morning a week through the fall anyway!

anyway, on to what i know you guys are actually here for…what i ate wednesday!

yesterday started off as always…a mug of coffee (only x2 yesterday!).

and a big bowl of oats!

there are frozen blueberries and very berry cherry blend hidden under there and it’s topped with some homemade (last summer) rhubarb strawberry jam and liz-made cinnamon almond butter.

but…these oats got a special twist thanks to a new goodie i found at trader joe’s!

this amazing sugar, chocolate, and coffee bean grinder! just a sprinkle on top really spiced up the oats. i’m officially addicted after one morning!

lunch was an unphotographed hodgepodge of snacks that included pickles, pita chips, a green apple, and some carrots + garlic hummus.

oh, and this beauty.

our homemade kombucha! i’ll finish up the tutorial later today or tomorrow…

dinner was also a hodgepodge, but it included a new treat! i’ve professed my love for horseradish, and for this horsey hummus from trader joe’s before.

and i was thinking the other day that since i’m now a hummus-making pro i’ve made hummus a few times before, i should be able to throw together my own horseradish hummus without a recipe. and guess what?! it worked!

horseradish hummus

  • 1 can garbanzo beans
  • 1/4 cup tahini
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1/8 cup water
  • 4 tsp premixed horseradish sauce (see below for what i used)
  • 1 tsp olive oil

  • add all ingredients to food processor.
  • process.
  • done.

it’s so easy!

and the result is a spicy horseradish-y hummus!

i seriously can’t get enough of this stuff! however, if you’re sensitive to horseradish or spice, i’d recommend halving the horseradish in the recipe and adding more to taste. it’s pretty spicy!

anyway, since i was so enamored with this new hummus, it had to be featured in our smorgasbord dinner!

i just set out this table of food, and we ate up!

included in the choices were:

  • palek paneer (pre-made from trader joe’s – it was just meh)
  • spinach artichoke dip (also from tj’s frozen section)
  • almost empty bag of whole wheat tostitos for dipping
  • snap pea crisps
  • sliced tomatoes for dipping**
  • sliced white & yellow cukes for dipping**
  • 3 leftover greek style meatballs
  • and of course, the horseradish hummus!

**tomatoes and cucumbers fresh from the garden!

i ate up those veggies and helped brad finish up the paneer. it was a tasty meal! sometimes i like having little bits of a lot of choices, than a lot of one or two things, so this was perfect!

are you a horseradish fan like i am?

i can’t get enough of it!

  1. ooooh i might have to try that hummus. i’ve been making tons of roasted garlic hummus. so good!

  2. Thanks for the recipe. I love the bite horseradish adds to things!

  3. Chelsea says:

OMG that coffee/sugar grinder thing looks insanely good. I love the horseradish hummus from TJs. We haven’t done hummus at home in a long time, but that would be an excellent flavor to make.

  4. Ick on the horseradish, but yum on the kombucha! What flavor did you make? Also – how fun is that grinder? And, wow, I just pulled a Chandler like way of talking for that last sentence….

    • Sarah says:

lol! I love the friends reference! 🙂 and I’ll talk about the Kombucha tomorrow, but we used blackberry crush juice from trader Joe’s!

  5. Sam says:

  6. I LOVE smorgasboard type dinners! When I was a kid, my mom would set up a “living room picnic” where we would lay out a blanket on the floor and enjoy a bunch of our favorite finger foods! I still have snacky type dinners like that today…tonight was dessert hummus with pretzels, a slice of toast with pb, cherries, and a big ol’ mug of almond milk to wash it down!

That horsey hummus is the BEST! I’ve already decided that it’s going to be my next savory hummus…just gotta pick up some horseradish sauce!

Oh and I totally almost bought that grinder the last time I was at TJ’s! It was in my cart and everything! Haha! Guess I’ll be going back to get it soon! 😉

  7. To be honest… I dont’ think I’ve ever had horseradish!!! Isn’t that crazy? But I love hummus, so this seems like a good way to try it!

  8. I’m not so much a horseradish fan, but Christopher LOVES it! He would think this hummus is amazing! 🙂

  9. I’m soooooooooooo sensitive to horseradish! I still want to try it though! =) Happy WIAW Sarah!
